The condition of your skin says a lot about you. A person's general standard of health can often be understood through the appearance of their face. Acne and skin problems are very often a cause of nutritional deficiencies and are a sure-fire sign of ill health. I'm sure most of you reading this have woken up one morning, not feeling particularly good, and have seen that your condition is reflected on your skin in the mirror. As a results, face creams and special cleansers sell millions fo pounds worth of products each year, and do you know some of the most important ingredients - mircro-nutrients! My question is; why spend so much money rubbing them on your face or bathing in them when you could just ingest them as we were intended?

Observational studies have been carried out showing that populations suffer far less acne when eating traditional diets, native to their culture (Rosenberg EW, Kirk BS. Acne diet reconsidered. Arch. Dermatol 177:193-95, 1981). So, if you're born and bred in the UK, why is pineapple juice part of your diet?

Experimental studies have shown that supplemental fibre, at 1oz daily, results in rapid clearing of acne in participants (Kaufman WF. The diet and acne. Letter to the Editor. Arch. Dermatology 199(4):276, 1983).

Zinc deficiency has also been shown to cause problematic skin conditions in several studies on both male and female participants and especially in young males. Zinc is one of my pet hates when it comes to deficiencies! Zinc is an important trace mineral and is responsible for many processes in the human body. It is one of the most abundant trace minerals, yet is also one for the most common deficiencies.

In order to maintain healthy skin and a healthy body, make sure that you are eating a healthy diet and (this bit is important) supplementing it well with the appropriate nutrients for optimal health. The skin never lies!
